The Appeal of a Second-Story Loft Space

by BILL NESS on OCTOBER 11, 2013

Four Seasons at Harbor Bay offers large loft spaces ideal for special interests, recreations or hobbies.

When it comes to buying a home for retirement, many homebuyers prefer main-level living. This often leads to choosing ranch-style single-family homes, one-level attached homes or condos. However, homes with second-story lofts open up the possibility of enjoying main-level living as well as additional space which can be used in a variety of ways.

While main-level living may provide convenience and limit the need to climb stairs throughout the day, there are several reasons why it might be nice to have living areas that are separated from the rest of the house. Moving home offices and craft rooms to a second floor may make them a quieter place to work away from distractions. If you prefer to keep these frequently-used areas on the main level, moving a guest bedroom to the upper level will free up more first floor space. Having a guest suite on another floor provides more privacy as well, both for your guests and for you in your first-floor master bedroom.

Depending on the style of your home, you may use a second-story loft in a number of different ways. A loft can be a great place to put a home office, a hobby room, an exercise area, a TV room or even a playroom for visiting grandchildren. It can also work as a great, out-of-the-way storage area, and some floor plans include specifically designed storage rooms as a portion of the upper level.

There are many different designs available for homes with second-story lofts. The upper level may cover only a portion of the main floor or it may span the whole space. The loft may be a simple, open area or have fully enclosed rooms. Larger second-story lofts may feature a combination of open area, storage closets, guest bedrooms and bathrooms.

When buying a new construction home, optional full bathrooms are typically a useful addition to a second-story loft. A bathroom adds privacy and convenience to a guest suite. You will also appreciate having a bathroom near a home office, craft room, exercise room or playroom. If your floor plan only offers a small open space or a loft storage area, adding an optional bathroom may not be as important. However, additional bathrooms do usually add value to your home and they are often harder to install after the house is complete.

Second-story lofts add versatility to the convenience of main-level living. They can be a great way for active adults to find a low-maintenance home that still has space for guests, hobbies or a home office

Benefits of Working with a 55+ Real Estate Expert

Benefits of Working with a 55+ Real Estate Expert

(by BILL NESS on JULY 8, 2013) works with real estate agents who are active adult experts in their local areas.

When searching for a new home, it’s important to have the help of a trusted real estate agent. This is even more important when you are looking for a specific lifestyle, such as retirement in an active adult community. While any real estate agent can help you find your next home, an agent experienced in 55+ communities is better equipped to locate a community that meets your retirement dreams.

There are many factors to consider when searching for your ideal active adult community. You will want to know all about the amenities (both current and planned), the available social groups and the typical community events. Of course, you will also want to learn more about the available homes and find the model that will best meet your needs.

Many larger active adult communities have long development periods which can result in dozens of available home models. There may be different neighborhoods within the same development, and each may have its own benefits and drawbacks. In some communities, neighborhoods have their own satellite clubhouses. In others, some sections have the benefits of being closer to the main clubhouse. The amount of included home or yard maintenance can also vary from one neighborhood to the next.

A real estate expert who has plenty of experience working in local 55+ communities can give you the inside information about the available developments. She can show you which sections of the community were built first and which are more recent. She can tell you what to expect about the layouts of older resale homes and also show you the finer points of new construction options.

In addition to knowing the ins and outs of buying and selling real estate, a 55+ community expert understands the retirement lifestyle. She has experience helping older buyers downsize and stay within their budget. She can help show a broader picture of life in an active adult community, and she appreciates a desire to balance a dream location with a need to stay relatively close to family.

There are a few ways you can find a real estate agent who is experienced in working with older homebuyers and retirees. First, you can look for a Realtor who has a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation. This National Association of Realtors designation shows that a real estate agent has completed a special course outlining the needs of older homebuyers. also makes it easy to find agents experienced with 55+ communities. Every community listing throughout the site has a link to a recommended real estate agent. These professionals have been chosen for their expertise in their local 55+ communities. They are accustomed to working with empty nesters and retirees, as well as long-distance buyers and those who are new to their area.

If you are not already working with a real estate agent, consider choosing one with the experience to help you find your dream retirement destination.

“Charlie Brown Medley – ThePianoGuys”

As we get into the fall October season and decorating for Halloween, I got to thinking about one of my favorite cartoon strips “Peanuts” and the Great Pumpkin.  That led me to Carlie Brown.  So if you go to YouTube and search for “Charlie Brown Medley – ThePianoGuys”, you are in for a real treat on the magic of music around seniors.  It might inspire us to bring more music into our senior centers.  Also, if your senior center has the capability to project this from a computer or “air stream” to a large screen it would be fun to show it at your centers.
